Small Product Assignment 2 - Blog Research

Small Product Assignment 2

Task: Select a small product category and photograph the products in a consistent style. We are required to shoot four different products within the category that addresses the individual characteristics of each product.

Product: Spirits

Concept: Each of the four products will be photographed in a consistent similar style but each will have some sort of indicator as to the taste of the product.

Examples:

This photograph is a good example of the lighting I would like to use.

This photograph has a similar concept to how I intend to create a sense of taste this image visually shows a popular drink that can be made using their product.

Lighting Ideas: To keep my photographs consistent across all four images I will using similar lighting techniques, camera angels and themes. I intend to use a direct view of the product so the camera will be in line with the object. Lighting will be simple using one spotlight with a gel to light and colour the background. I will use a long soft box light to the side of the bottle to illuminate the length of one side. A reflector or a diffused light on the other side will add some fill light to give detail to both sides. Back light may be needed if shooting a black product against a black background in order to separate the product from the background.

At this stage I will be using either white or black backdrops to suit the product. Other objects that relate to each product may be out of focus in the background to give some hint into the product. For example if I shoot 'Malibu' as one of my Spirit products I may have some coconut somewhere in the image to give an indicator of taste.

Lighting Deconstruction:

This photograph of a wine bottle has a white background lighted quite high key to blow it out possibly for the purpose of deep-etching for a catalogue/brochure. It has a long light most likely a soft box to the front left side to give it that reflected light area on the side. There is either a reflector or maybe a diffused light source on the other side to keep the lighting consistent across the bottle.
