Small Product Assignment 1 - Blog Research

Small Product Assignment 1

Task: To create two photographs with the intent to combine the to make a product advertisement. One photograph must be of the product and the other is to be of a person that references the product in some way. Another image of a logo will also be combined to the final product.

Product: Perfume

Concept: Perfume advertisements are aimed to make the viewer think that if you wear this perfume you will feel differently about yourself. eg. More confident, sexy, beautiful, elegant and so on.
For my product shoot I intend to recreate a perfume advertisement typical to what we see everyday in magazines, on posters and commercials. I want to pick the theme of feeling confident and happy about yourself with a little bit of a magical element.

Below are some examples of the perfume I will be using.

Lighting Set Up for Product: I will be using a white background and surface to create a deep-etched photograph to allow it to be easily transferred to the image of the person. So basically the set up I will be using includes lighting the background with two lights with possibly diffusers in front of them, have a large soft box over top and a soft box on either side to get a even lighting set up. When shooting I will assume that my lighting set up may vary slightly depending on the shape of the bottle. For instance if it is a tall long bottle I may switch one of my side soft boxes to having a longer head on it.

Lighting Set Up for Model: I intend to use a soft lighting set up that will give the model's skin a very natural look. I want to use a hair light to create something a little bit more interesting. I will be lighting the model from the side and using a reflector on the other side to keep the detail there. The coloured dots represent my background which is discussed below.

Original diagram from : http://bo-ching.blogspot.com/ Has been adjusted to suit my lighting requirements.

Background: I want to keep my background quite simple at this stage I think I will be using a soft white background but also plan to try a darker one too. To add some interest and continue on with my colourful and feminine theme I want to use colourful lights behind the subject to create a bokeh effect as shown below.

Props/Equipment:
- Perfume
- Wardrobe
- Fairy Lights
- Camera Gear
- Studio Lights

Colouring: To create a feminine quality to the advertising of the product I will be using all pastel colours to give the photograph and product a very girly feel. The photograph should be very colourful advertising a feel 'good' element to selling the product.

Other factors: I currently a make up artist and hair dresser who I have worked with before that would be interested in assisting with the shoot to give it a more professional touch. Also waiting confirmation on a model.
